merka asked:

I am constantly told eat better, get more sleep and relax. I have found this both difficult and ineffective. My most hated PMS symptoms are inability to sleep or concentrate, emotion meltdowns and cramps. Right before my last math exam i couldnt sleep then i broke down crying for no reason right before entering the room and then sat there unable to focus on the page and only ended up answering half the questions. I will fail high school at this rate. Does the pill help with these symptoms? If not what medication will help?

Yeah, the pill works. Have you tried midol or pamprin?
I heard YAZ also works, but you will have to talk to your doctor about that.

I had been suffering from this problem for years and then I started taking 5htp (hydroxytryptophan) for depression. You take 50-100mg at night. I started to feel better so then I hit on the idea of trying a 50mg each morning in the run up to my period – about a week before. You take this dose as well as the night time dose.

    and

    It worked!

I felt so much better! Calmner, much less irritability, less crying etc.

The 5htp will help you get off to sleep too.

I also take Evening Primrose Oil, Vitamin B complex, Ginkyo Biloba and a multivitamin/mineral.

You can buy 5htp from health food stores or over the ‘net. It’s an amino-acid, not a drug. It’s safe and non-addictive.

If you suffer from chronic tiredness then try Rhodiola Rosea (Siberian Golden Root). I always feel very sleepy just before my period.

Try cutting out caffeine as well. Even in tea…….this has also helped with the irritability before periods.

I hope you feel better soon.

I have severe PMS known as PMDD. I had some of the same problems that you go through especially the emotional meltdowns and depression. I tried all sorts of things, like avoiding caffeine and simple carbs, taking extra calcium, etc. Nothing worked!! The Dr. put me on the birth control pill, Yaz last year. It’s helped me substantially. I’m not 100% better but at least I’m able to function before my period where as before I was a giant, hormonal mess. And of course it provides me with extra perks like clear skin and being protected from pregnancy. Woo-hoo!

I have also heard of low doses of anti depressants helping those with bad PMS/PMDD. If the Yaz wouldn’t have worked so well then I would have condsidered this option.

    Good Luck! :-)
